The Challenge
The CCFFMG (College for the Coordination and Training of Future General Practitioners) faced a crucial challenge: the ongoing shortage of general practitioners in several rural and underserved urban areas. Despite existing initiatives, too few general practice internships were being offered in these territories. The challenge was twofold: to improve the geographical distribution of internships and to ensure their pedagogical quality. Both levers are essential to encourage young doctors to settle sustainably in areas with limited medical coverage. To act effectively, the CCFFMG aimed to base its decisions on robust data, clear operational criteria, and training mechanisms adapted to local realities.
Our Solution
To address these challenges, we developed a structured, research-driven approach built around four complementary areas of focus.
- We modeled a new internship distribution system aligned with territorial realities.
- We evaluated the impact of decentralized inter-university seminars to strengthen their attractiveness.
- We defined precise operational criteria to identify areas affected by medical shortages.
- We implemented a continuous evaluation framework to measure the outcomes of the action plan.
At each stage, we encouraged a participatory process and used rigorous analytical tools to deliver concrete recommendations, aimed at improving accessibility, quality, and the overall impact of general practice internships in the most underserved regions.
The Results
Our work fully met the objectives set out at the start of the project. We delivered reliable data, clear operational criteria for identifying shortage areas, and strategic recommendations adapted to on-the-ground realities. The distribution models we developed now underpin a more balanced internship offering, better aligned with local needs.
